Future of Solar Technology: Solar window panels

Solar energy is the natural energy which can be used to produce clean electricity. Photo voltaic cells in solar panel capture certain wavelengths of solar radiations and convert them to electricity. These photo voltaic cells are commonly made from Silicon. Most of the solar panels can produce 8 to 10 kilowatt of energy per square foot. Considering there are over 57 million Sq miles of land on earth, we would need to install solar panels on over 191,000 Sq miles, to power the entire earth with renewable energy.

From decades, solar power is being extracted from the solar panels which are ground mounted and installed on the roof tops. These days, extensive researches are being made to invent new technologies with respect to solar panel functioning, increasing the efficiency of the power output from the panel and reducing the cost of solar panel installations .One such latest invention is “Solar Panel Windows”. Technology which uses windows of the buildings to generate electricity from the sun is coined as “Solar Panel Windows”.

We all know that, windows are meant to let light and air through the building. Apart from traditional ground mount and roof top solar panels, standard glass windows of the buildings can be replaced with the solar panel windows. The power generated from the solar panel window could be an additional source of power along with other solar installations done in the building.

Building owners love solar window panel installation because, they can be much more aesthetically appealing and easier to maintain than traditions solar options.
Solar window panel needs to be reconciled, letting incoming light through to illuminate a room and also capture incoming light to use for energy production. Generation of power from the glass of solar panel window, the technology is much further away.  In order to make fully transparent solar panel windows a reality, quantum dots should be embedded in the glass windows. This would absorb light and re-emit it as infrared light towards the solar cells housed at the edges of the window panels, which would be used to generate power.

The only currently installed solar windows are made by the company Physee. Solar windows are installed in one building in the world, a Dutch bank with over 300 Sq feet of Power Windows. These windows can generate enough power to charge a smartphone, few times a day.

There are many new technologies either in development or early production stages that fall under the category of “Solar Windows”. The technology with this category could definitely hit the mass market in the near future.
